Helping Feral Cats

There are many excellent resources for helping Stray and Feral Cats.  (visit our Feral Cat Resources page) Here are some of the basics.

The Difference Between Feral Cats,  Wild Cats, and Stray Cats

Feral Cats Feral cats are descendants of domestic cats.  They often live alone or in established feeding colonies.  They often have had little human contact and tend to keep their distance.  The average life span of an adult feral cat living alone is approximately two years, or approximately five years if part of a feeding colony.

Domestic cats have an average life span between 12 - 18 years, even longer if they are kept strictly indoors.

Stray cats are also descendants of domestic cats.  Strays have often been abandoned by their human family.  These cats, though initially shy, may come to trust and appreciate human caregivers, sometimes becoming beloved family pets. They are occasionally referred to as free roaming cats or homeless cats as well.

Wild cats are not descendants of domestic cats, but of other wild cats.  These wild felines have had little or no exposure to humans and are likely to remain wild.

Why Feeding Feral Cats Makes Sense

Feral and stray cats wander all the countries of the Earth.  Feeding them is not only humane, but helps to discourage them from killing indigenous birds and other prey necessary for a healthy eco system.

Feral Feeding Colonies

Feeding colonies, operated by caring volunteers, are designed to provide a reliable food source for Stray and Feral cats.   Many thousands of volunteers manage feeding stations for these unwanted animals.  This act of kindness helps to prevent starvation, and also provides a link for possible adoption.

Trapping

To help control feral cat populations, many volunteers trap feral cats and take them to a veterinarian for spay or neutering.  Once they are sterilized, they are released again, or added to a feeding colony.  Most volunteers work with caring veterinarians, who will often lower their fees when treating stray and feral cats.  Trapping for sterilization is a humane method for feral population control.

Adoption

The Humane Society is a wonderful place to go if you want to adopt a pet.  Many pet stores and veterinarians also help families adopt animals.  The internet is the best source for locating Humane Societies, Veterinarians, and other places to adopt pets.  Many require you to spay or neuter your adopted pet.
